Garage Door Won't Close? Ask What Changed Since Yesterday

A garage door that won’t close is rarely broken in the way people fear. The springs lifted it this morning. The track carried it. If it goes up fine and refuses to come down, the mechanical side has already passed its test, and what’s left is the close-cycle safety logic reacting to something in your garage. Usually something that changed recently.

That’s the most useful question you can ask before touching anything: what’s different since the last time it closed? Doors don’t develop sensor problems out of nowhere nearly as often as garages change around them.

The short version:

  • Check the photo eyes first. The two small sensors near the floor cause most refused closes. Both should show steady lights.
  • Think back a day or two. A moved trash can, a swept-out corner, a bumped sensor bracket, or a power blip explains more won’t-close calls than any failed part.
  • If nothing changed, suspect the opener. Force limits drift and logic boards age. That’s a repair visit, and in Sidney it typically runs $100 to $300.

Did anything move near the floor?

The photo eyes sit a few inches off the concrete on both sides of the opening, and anything crossing the line between them stops the door. The beam is lower and wider than people expect. What if nothing changed at all?

Then the odds shift toward the opener, and the door’s behavior narrows it down. Reversing at the same spot every time points to a worn or binding section of track at that height. Reversing at random points, grinding from the motor head, or a door that needs two or three tries suggests a tired drive gear or logic board. Sensors that blink even after cleaning and re-aiming may have failing wiring rather than bad aim.
